Life without
Electricity
Can we
imagine a life without electricity? Perhaps No! Whether for domestic purposes,
irrigation, water supply, industries, transportation – in almost all spheres we
require electricity. From where do we
get electricity? – it may be from
coal, diesel, wind, water or nuclear
power. Each source of power has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Basically it depends on the source.
Kerala state
depends on hydro electric power because plenty of water is available from
streams and rivers for generation of
power. Since on date we do not have the required quantity of power we have to
get it from the central pool. During extreme summer days, the maximum daily
consumption will be around 76 MU .To cope up the increased demand of power, it is necessary to
augment the generating capacity of the power plants. For this new generating stations
are to be constructed.
When a new
dam is constructed across a river, it may lead to several environmental
problems. Lot of trees may have to be cut, the local people will have to shifted to new places, nearby areas
may be submerged, birds and animals in
the forest areas may be endangered …. like that a big list of problems. As such
it is very essential to conduct a detailed analysis of the impacts on the
environment and then come to a proper solution to the problem along with the
chances for alternative sources of power.
