Alternate Energy

Choosing the Right Sources of Renewable Electricity for Your Location

Selecting the type of alternate energy for your home depends on the best available at the particular locality at an affordable price. The main renewable energy sources are wind, solar and hydro power Out of these three the most commonly used are solar, wind and micro hydro in that order.
The selection of a particular energy source also depends on the actual availability of these energy resources, rebates and incentives offered by the government agencies.

Green Building

Design of a Green Building

Everybody wants to have a house of their own to lead a comfortable life. It is normally one’s cherished dream – a beautiful dream house. Different options are available in this connection – purchase an exiting house and modify and renovate it; have a new ready made flat; construct a new one according to own wish and layout. But before going for the final selection, one has to do some market survey with regard to the location and plan of the house that suits one’s budget.

In this connection it will be interesting to know about a particular incident. Baby purchased a plot and constructed a house. The house warming ceremony was celebrated in a grand scale. He had invited all his relatives and friends on the occasion. After a couple of months, monsoon started. That day there was a heavy down pour. As usual in the evening, both Mrs and Mr Baby returned from office together. When they reached their home, to their utter dismay, they found that they were not in a position to enter their home, as the area was flooded, and water had entered their home. They were compelled to shift to their friend’s home for a couple of days as their house was not habitable. Shortly afterwards, they disposed that house and purchased another house in a different locality.

What was the problem there? Baby got the plan of the house made from an architect; engaged a contractor and constructed the house according to the plan. But unfortunately neither the architect, builder or Baby enquired about the conditions of the locality of the house. Actually that area was susceptible for floods during heavy rains.

Lesson learnt - Before constructing a new house, it is very essential to enquire about the site conditions from the persons in and around that place and also observe the seasonal variations for at least one year

Life Style

Body Mind Interaction
A school going child complains he is having tension, a hose wife complains she is under severe stress, an employed person complains he is having lot of mental worries in connection with his office work- persons of all ages and walks of life are having mental worry and tension in one way or the other. To a certain extent, it is all right. It is normal for a boy appearing for an examination to have tension to a limited extent, as it helps him to concentrate in his studies and perform well in the examination. Similarly, it s natural for a player engaged in a tournament to have tension, as it generates competitive spirit in him and he can play well.

But the problem arises when the tension exceeds the border line. The border line depends upon the individual concerned - his age, mental disposition, family circumstances and the specific environment in which he is surrounded in.

Environmental Issues

In the beginning man ate fruits, drank water from natural streams and lived under a tree in the forest. Later he felt the need of a house and constructed; cleared the woods and started agriculture; collected firewood by cutting the trees and cooked his food. Slowly he started inflicting damage to the nature and environment.

Population of the planet increased in course of time, technological advancement took place, and more industries came up. This in turn caused atmospheric pollution and degradation of the environment. Now the pollution has increased in alarming proportion. Unless we take corrective steps, future generation s will be finding it difficult to live in the earth. The natural resources are getting depleted.

Pollution is making undesirable changes in the environment. The green cover is rapidly shrinking on Planet Earth. Humans have to combat many manmade effects that have harmed the Mother Nature in many ways over the years. Climatic changes, deforestation, destruction of habitat and extinction of species, rising pollution levels are some of the current environmental issues we are faced with today. Some of the major environmental issues we need to deal with are:

Alternate Energy

Conventional and Alternate Energy

Introduction

Our ancestors ate fruits, drank water from streams and led a happy life. Slowly they started cooking food by collecting wood from forests. They walked on foot, used bullock carts, horse driven carts and hand - pulled rickshaws for transport ; used kerosene oil
lanterns for light in the night.

Slowly fossil fuels were identified. Coal, petroleum and natural gas come under the category of fossil fuels. These are formed in the earth’s crust from decayed organic materials. Fossil fuels are deposits of carbon stored under ground or beneath the sea. They are fossilized remains of plants and animas which have decayed millions of years ago. High pressure and heat from the earth’s core caused the decaying matter turn into a spongy-texture substance called peat and then into a hard carbon-rich rock (coal) or liquid (petroleum).

Green Building

Environmental Friendly Green Home

Food, shelter, clothing – these are the essential requirements of any human being. As population increases, the demand for more houses also increases. Man is compelled to inflict more damages on mother earth in connection with the construction of houses. There is a chain reaction on this account like consumption of energy increases, atmospheric pollution increases, demand for water increases and global warming increases. The ecological balance is disturbed and the environment becomes unbearable for humans to live.

The importance of green buildings comes into picture at this juncture. Green buildings help to save water, energy and material resources in the construction and maintenance of buildings.

Peace of Mind

Everybody in this world wants to lead a comfortable life with peace of mind. But it remains almost a wish only. In the present day world, majority of persons of all ages, of all professions, man, woman- all are having worry and mental tension on one account or the other. Only the degree of the tension may vary and the away in which one reacts to it.

Our ancestors were leading a contended, happy and peaceful life in villages. Their wants and wishes were limited and their sphere of activities restricted. But now, the situation is entirely different. Everybody is in a hurry. There is no time for them to have even their meals at the correct time nor have proper rest and sleep. They want to earn more money and have more material comforts at the cost of their health and well being.

Happiness and Peace of mind are out of their dictionary. In its place, worry and tension only are there. In other words, almost all are leading a tense, miserable, unhappy life with stress induced sickness like high blood pressure, head ache, diabetes, cholesterol, fatigue, indigestion etc.

Time Management

The usual talk that we hear now a days is that "I am busy, I have got no time for that.."

No doubt a nice excuse indeed.

A year has 12 months, a month 30/31 days, 1 day 24 hours, 1 hour 60 minutes - that is for every body; nobody can deny this.

But the question still remains unanswered - No time?

If you go to a village, you will find people living there in a leisurely manner without much hurry, worry or tension.A contended life.

But the modern day man of a city has got no time. He is always in a hurry, with a worried face and full of tension and worry. Why ? What is the solution?

One most important reason of this worry and hurry is the lack of time management.
The available resources in terms of time and manpower have to be properly utilized. Prioritize the work and distribute it properly among different persons.Monitor the progress of the work periodically.Hurdles and bottlenecks if any should be sorted out.

Have proper consultations , avoid procrastinations and try to be systematic.

Remember 'Time and tide wait for no man.'

Green Green Everywhere

Some time back I heard a talk in which a journalist was talking to a group of persons. She was telling that she liked the color green very much and wanted to live in a green environment.

Actually it is the case with me also. I also want to live a green environment.I have given the name "Green View" to my house.

I was born and brought up in a small village. In front of my house was green paddy fields. I had to walk through the fields to reach the nearby road. Just in front of my house was a small stream . All the year round water used to flow through it. In my house compound there was a tank. I used to take bath from the tank.

But after I completed my studies, I shifted to a town in connection with my employment. I had to forget the sweet green surroundings. In the city there was practically, no greenery. Only some small garden in front of the quarter in which I was staying.

I had been to the major cities of India as well as some cities abroad like London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Zurich, Oman, Kuwait etc.It was very difficult to view some green patch any where.

But after retirement from service, I decided to settle in a small town. The surroundings here are almost like that in my native village.

Sitting in the front portico of my house, I can have the sweet memories of childhood.

Thoughts Concentrated

Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of Telephones said :
Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.

Quite right indeed. What many people do? They have scattered thoughts; they will not concentrate on one job at a time.

Result? They are not in a position to achieve their goal. This is the case with almost all persons of all classes, types and ages.

There is an old saying:

"One thing at a time,
And that done well
Is a very good rule
As many can tell! "

The lack of concentration fritters the energy and diminishes its powers.

Work is started with a bang but ends in a whimper.

Another proverb is - Slow and steady wins the race. But what normally happens with the majority of persons is they lose interest slowly and discontinue their endeavors.

Remember again - Concentrate all your energies and thoughts on one point or work.
Success is yours , no doubt.

Home Based Business

Now a days more and more people are going for home based business. One can become his own boss. The advantages are many. He can work according to his time and convenience.
He can work from his house itself.

The internet, mobile phone are some of the gadgets that have added to the convenience of home based business.

Freelance writing, web development, marketing, software development, insurance agency - these are some of the fields in which one can work sitting in one's house.

The trouble of shuttling from one place to another, accomodation at the place of posting all can be dispensed with the home based business.

At the same time there are some draw backs also. Almost all the work has to be done self. There may be occasional disturbance from family members.

Tensionfree Life

In the present day world, it is difficult to find a person with out tension. It is part and parcel of life. Whether a school going child, grown up person, retired senior citizen, man ,woman - all are having tension in one way or the other.

To a certain extent it is all right. For example a candidate preparing for an examination or a player playing in the field - there will be certain emotional upswing. That is imaginable and desirable.

But the problem becomes acute, when the tension exceeds the optimal level. It creates a series of problems like increased blood pressure, annoyance, severe head ache, diabetes and heart problems.

Also if the person is in an agitated mood, he quarrels with other persons in an office or family creating sometimes very ugly scenes. He loses his temper and shouts and sometimes fights with others. He may lose his appetite, will not be getting proper sleep. He will be an unwanted guest wherever he goes.

Then the question arises. What is the remedy? Is there any medicine for this.
Practically no medicine. It is his control over the thoughts and emotions - that is required.Remain in a calm and peaceful mood.

Happiness and Job Satisfaction

Ideally one should be able to work in an an environment where one can derive job satisfaction. Then only one will be able to work whole heartedly and put all his energies. But the big question is - Do all people are able to work in such a situation?
Chances are very less.

One should be able to have sufficient monetary compensation for the work he/she renders. That is very important. Then only one would be able to lead a comfortable life.

Job satisfaction cannot be measured, it can only be felt or experienced. It depends on the individual tastes and likes. For example if a person is asked to teach a particular subject to students and if he has got no interest in teaching, he may feel quite boring and uninteresting in it.

To a limit extent, interest can be created in a particular area or field, but still the person should have some inclination towards it.

Financial Planning

Yesterday I attended a seminar on stock broking organised jointly by Malayala Manorama and broking firm India Infoline at Calicut.

The speaker briefly outlined the present financial scenario and gave his recommendations on different scrips. Some of his recommendations were Reliance, Airtel,IDBI, SBI,PNB.

He was of the opinion it is meaningless to enter the stock market for short term period, but should plan for a longer time horizon to actually benefit.

The sensex is at the lower ebb now a days as multi nationals are pulling out from stock market and putting the money in debt market.Perhaps the situation may change after some time.

Address

In good olden times, people used to communicate through letters. The letters are dropped in boxes provided by the postal department. The postman collects the letters, sorts them as per the address given and sends to the particular place. At the destination, again the letters are sorted and delivered to the addressee. In the address, the name of the person, house name/number, street/village name and city/town's name are indicated.

The procedure is the same whether it is the residential address or office address.Later in offices, fax machines were installed and the communication became very fast.As technology advanced, computers and internet came into being.Individuals were identified through their email addresses. Further advancements in the hardware and software arenas, made individual websites as a profile and professional indicators.

In real time communication can be established through email, fax and mobile/internet phones.

Bath for Rejuvenation of Body

Cold water bathing in early morning hours is considered as a normal routine from time immemorial in some countries like India, China and Japan.

Of course in the present day world, due to urbanization, just like in other spheres, there is a change in this system also. In earlier times , villagers used to take bath in ponds, rivers or streams. But in the present day, with a multistorey building flats based life, the situation has changed. Due to the scarcity of water in some towns, a good bath is a luxury.

Hippocrates considered to be the father of modern medicine treated various diseases with water therapy.Another person who practiced water therapy was Vincent Preissnity, an Austrian. His observation was sick animals normally got into running water of streams and rivers for bath and got natural treatment.

While some people like hot water bath, others prefer cold water bath. Both has got its own advantages and the individual likes and body conditions. A bath gives a nourishing touch to the body and removes the physical and mental tiredness.

Need of a Hobby

What is a hobby?

It is a leisure time activity or occupation. The type of hobby depends on the interest of the person concerned. Some hobbies are painting, writing, gardening, doll making, stitching etc.

In addition to the proper use of the leisure time, it can be made as a profitable
venture. The products made can be marketed and revenue generated out of that.

The physical activity associated with the hobby generates body movements while the mental activity can serve as an intellectual stimulant. Thus both physically and mentally it invigorates the body.

If the persons living in a particular locality can come under a common umbrella for a specific hobby, then the resources can be shared to the benefits all members.
