Internet and home business

         Internet and Home Business

key words: internet, home business, freelancer, software development

Internet has come as a useful tool for home based business. People can sit in the comfort of their homes, and at their own convenience can do the business. There is no need to shuttle from home to office and back, no wastage of time in journey, saving in petrol expenses etc. But of course it has got its own limitations. All types of work can't be done by sitting in a house. For a worker to work on a machine he has to go the factory, for an engineer to supervise a construction activity he has to go to the work site, for a pilot to fly a plane he has to sit in the cockpit ... like that so many works. For a freelancer, internet related work is very much suitable. A writer, web developer, structural designer, software developer, artist, draftsman all come under this category. In a conventional office environment, the situation is entirely different. All the staff from the top to the bottom will be under one umbrella and as such mutual consultation and group meetings can be easily arranged. Thus even though the home business has got its own limitations, in the coming years with the vast developments in the internet based technologies, more and more people will be going for home based businesses.

Be happy and contended

 Be happy and contended

tags- happy, contended, money, brood

We must be happy and contended. Happiness can't be purchased. It is your mental attitude; your thoughts. There is a wrong notion; money is the main source of happiness. No doubt money has a very important role to play. For your day to day needs ,you require money. But remember- Money is not every thing. One must try to lead a contended life. There is no limit for one's needs and aspirations. With the resources at your disposal you must try to help others in which ever way it is possible. Do not brood over the past and waste your time. Be creative and get engaged and involved. It is perfectly apt to remember:

 "Idle mind is devil's workshop."

Yesterday is dead, Tomorrow is yet to come

Yesterday is dead, Tomorrow  is  yet to come

tags  - yesterday, tomorrow, today, forget, forgive

Swamiji says, Why brood over the past?

Forget about it! Concentrate on the present.

Look and study nature - the sky, sea, rain, fire, sun, moon.

All have their role to play in our lives.

Throw away unwanted thoughts from our minds

Burn it; forget it

 Make life simple and happy

 Get engaged in some work

Don't sit idle.

Remember the old sayings:

"Idle mind is devil's workshop" .

" Forget and forgive, then you will never regret"

Investment in shares and stocks

                               Investment in shares/stocks

Tags- share, stock, BSE, NSE, Depository, Sensex, Nifty

In good olden days, people generally kept their savings (money) in boxes or safety lockers. But  in the present day, it is a risky affair. So people are now  putting their  money  in bank deposits. Other saving schemes are Mutual Fund and Stocks/Shares. The older generation  are slightly hesitant to put their money in shares. The stock brokers conducting seminars to educate the people giving  details of safe investment  in shares and stocks. Experts in the field are also holding webinars in these areas .Therefore the youngsters  are evincing keen interest in this field and are investing in stocks   taking into account their future needs.

A stock (also known as an equity) is a security representing  the ownership of a fraction of a company. This entitles the owner of the stock to a proportion of the company's assets and profits equal to the number of  stocks  they own. Units of stock are called "shares." Stocks are bought and sold through stock exchanges. To protect the investors from fraudulent practices, the share transactions  have to conform to government regulations.

Understanding Stocks

Companies  when they require money for their business operations, raise funds through  issue (sell) of stocks.  The holder of a stock (a shareholder)  has a claim to be part of company’s assets and earnings. In other words a share  holder is  an owner of the company in proportion to his share holding. Owning stock gives the share holder the right to vote in shareholders  meetings, receive dividends (which are the company’s profits) when they are distributed, and it gives him the right to sell his shares when required.

How to Buy a Share?

Stocks are bought and sold on stock exchanges. In India there are two stock exchanges- Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE).  A  company goes public through an initial public offering (IPO). At that time, its stock becomes available for investors to buy and sell on an exchange. So for an investor to buy and sell shares he has to open a trading account, demat account and a bank account. There are approved stock brokers in almost towns in India for this purpose

Some terms associated:

Investor : A person who invests money. One can open an account either himself or through a stock broker. For operating self, one should have an internet connection and aware of the fundamentals of stock market. No minimum amount is prescribed for opening a trading account. The investor’s interest is to get capital appreciation and the part of dividend out of the company’s  profit.

Stock broker: A firm or individual who executes the buy and sell on behalf an investor for a specific fee. They generally give advice to their clients what to buy /sell and when to do.

Stock Exchange: It is a place for buying and selling shares and bonds.  In India there are  two exchanges –   Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE)  and National Stock Exchange (NSE).

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI): The basic functions of SEBI are – To protect the interests of the investors and to regulate the securities market.

Depository: Previously share certificates were held in paper form whereas now it is held in electronic form.  Organizations which keep the shares in electronic form are called depositories. They issue holding statement to the investors showing the name of the company  in which they are having shares and the number of shares held. In India there are two depositories -  Central Depository Securities Ltd (CDSL) and National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL).

Nifty and Sensex: These are benchmark indices to measure the overall performance of the stock market. Nifty is used by the National  Stock Exchange and Sensex by the Bombay Stock Exchange

Environmental Ethics - Issues and solutions

                      Environmental Ethics-Issues and Solutions

tags- environment, ethics, earth day, natural resources, people and property

Ethics in a general sense can be interpreted as a  moral philosophy in which we look upon as what is right and what is wrong. Though ethics dates back to time immemorial, environmental ethics has come into lime light only recently. It considers the relationship between human beings and the surrounding environment.

Environmental Issues: Ethics

In earlier times, as nature loving, man led a calm and peaceful life, without inflicting much harm to the nature and its surroundings in which he was living. But as population increased and he shifted from caves to man - made houses, he was forced to cut trees and clear the forest. Man started using diesel/petrol driven vehicles, industries came up and this in turn led to the pollution of earth, air and water. The big question that has to be answered is: Is this ethical?

But a very important point to be remembered at this juncture is that man has a moral responsibility to preserve the natural resource for the coming generations. He should understand that he has to coexist with plants, animals, birds and other living creatures.

The problems are manifold, quite serious and enormous – green house effect, destruction of ozone layer, accumulation of toxic and nuclear wastes. To this is added the other after effects like extinction of certain endangered species, loss of biodiversity, disappearance of forest area etc.

Relevant Propositions

-Environmental destruction is mainly caused by the larger consumption of the rich.

-The GNP (Gross National Product) will be enhanced if we can stop and reverse the growing alienation between the people and the common property resources.

-There cannot be proper social and economic development without holistic  understanding between nature and society.

-Conserving and recreating nature must be of our highest priority.

Environmental Protection

Understanding the serious implications of depletion of the natural resources, earth day was started observing from April 22, 1970 onwards. The purpose of observing earth day was to make people, political leaders and government agencies aware the importance of caring and preserving the environment.

An ethic for nature   conservation   requires   environmental education and conservation awareness. The best way for this is to educate the young people and inculcate a sense of awareness in their minds regarding the importance of nature’s protection and harmful effects of degradation and pollution of the atmosphere, environment and surroundings.

Solutions

Man has to understand that he is not alone in this world and that he has to coexist with plants and animals. As such, he has to share the natural resources with other beings. Also he has to keep in mind that the resources are to be preserved for the coming generations. The difference between the rich and poor must be narrowed down to the maximum extent possible. As the world population increases, naturally the requirement for additional resources also increases; this in turn causing the depletion of the natural assets. Man should be particular care in not creating any situation for the extinction of species of any sort and also deforestation should be brought to the minimum supporting level. Conventional energy should be conserved to the maximum extent possible and use of non – conventional (alternative) energy should be encouraged.

Save Energy, Save Planet

Tags: energy, savings, shut down computer, use LED lights

Energy saved is money saved. The following steps will help in saving energy and also help in having a clean and green surroundings.

 Shut down your computer:
Considerable energy can be saved if the computers are   shut down when not in use.

 Cover the vessels when cooking:
By covering the vessels when cooking, heat will stay inside the vessel, leading to saving of energy.

Use LED lights:
Instead of ordinary bulbs, use LED lights. This will reduce the energy consumption. This will also lead to saving in electricity charges and also saving in purchase of lights as  LED lights last longer. The heat released to the atmosphere will also be reduced.

Plant trees:
Plant more trees in the surroundings depending on the availability of space. A tree is supposed to absorb one ton of carbon di oxide in its lifetime. The shade provided will make the environment cooler and thus reduces the consumption of electricity for the air conditioners up to 15%.

Use clothesline instead of a dryer.
One dryer releases an average of 500 kgs of carbon di oxide into the atmosphere every year. If you use a clothesline for drying, you will be able to reduce considerable amount of carbon di oxide release and also reduce the energy consumption.

Air pollution - causes, effects and remedial measures

Air pollution – causes, effects and remedial measures

Tags- air pollution, diseases, global warming, acid rain

Our ancestors were able to lead a healthy and happy life devoid of breathing polluted air, drinking dirty and unclean water and eating food articles raised from polluted soil. What are the reasons for this catastrophic state at present? The polluted air from major industries, large number of vehicles using petrol and diesel vehicles on the road, polluted water in the rivers and water streams and crops and vegetables raised from polluted fields have caused  a  havoc in the environment and its habitants- man, animals , birds and, monuments.

As per a US research team’s study, Delhi is the most polluted city in the world.

Their study shows that  the life span of  Indians have reduced by few years due to the particulate air pollution.

Causes

 Large scale industrialization

More  number of vehicles on the road.

Burning of stubble  in northern India especially in Punjab, Haryana and part of UP.

Effects

Global warming

Acid rain

Ozone layer depletion

Human health : Sun burn, skin cancer, cataract, aging of the skin

weakening of  body’s immune system

Food production: Reduced nutrient content of the soil and growth of plants

Effect on materials: Increased UV radiation damages paints on buildings and other structures

Control measures

Use  of CNG fuelled vehicles

Planting of trees

Height of chimneys should be increased  to  reduce pollution at the ground level

Public should be encouraged to share their vehicles so that number of vehicles on the road are reduced

Industries should be located far away from the heart of the city.

Create awareness in the society about the bad effects of pollution

Root Cause Analysis as a Management Tool

Root Cause Analysis as a Management Tool

Tags - root cause, reasons, solutions, question/answer

Root cause analysis is a method of problem solving. Its purpose is to identify the basic reasons of the problems and then  take steps to solve it immediately. Also take  necessary steps  to prevent the recurrence of such problems in future. Of course it is very difficult to prevent completely such recurrences.

General Principles of Root Cause Analysis: ( RCA )

RCA is a method of identifying the causes and solving them. Analysis is done after an event has occurred.  RCA can also be used to forecast or predict probable events even before they occur.

General Principles of Root Cause Analysis:

-The purpose of identifying different solutions to a particular problem is to remove it and then to  prevent its recurrence. The solution should be simple and cost effective.
-There can be more than one root cause for a problem.
-RCA must be done systematically and in the investigation report the causes must be clearly identified with supporting documents.
-The analysis should establish the sequence of events and their inter relationships.
-RCA can be done by different approaches: safety-based, production-based, process-based, failure-based, and systems-based.

Approaches

The analysis can be done in different ways. One method is a question-answer session.
Example: Washing machine is not working.

The probable question answer session can be:
When the machine stopped working?
Was there any unusual sound during the working?
Was there sufficient water inflow?
Was the front cover closed properly?
Was the soap powder of recommended quality?
Like that the questions can be increased and its answers found out. The solution may crop up in between.

Synopsis
In short ,the root cause analysis comprises the following steps:-
What is the problem?
When it happened?
How the problem happened?
Analyze and find the solution.

7. Spend time with children: Spend  some time with children in the family and neighborhood.  Mingling with children has a positive effect on the old and aged.

Summary

 Environment - Biodiversity

                               Tags: biodiversity, ecosystem, climate, DNA

Biodiversity  describes the variety of life  on Earth and all of the natural processes. This includes ecosystem, genetic and cultural diversity. It has taken billions of years to arrive at the present form of biodiversity. It forms the web life of which

humans are an integral part This diversity can be seen in terms of plants, animals and microorganisms. Till now scientists could identify only about 13 million species out of estimated 100 million. Chromosomes, genes, and DNA-the building blocks of life-determine the uniqueness of each individual and each species. . Biodiversity provides a  number of goods and services .

These goods and services are:

·         Purification of air and water

·         Decomposition of wastes

·         Control  Earth's climate

·         Control  floods, droughts, temperature

·         Renewal of soil fertility

·         Control of pests and diseases

·         Maintenance of genetic resources

·         Cultural and aesthetic benefits

·         Supply of food, fuel

India  is a mega diverse nation, having around 10% of world's species. Indian biodiversity is  related to the socio-cultural set up of India. Several species are facing extinction due to   population explosion, climate change and  implementation of wrong environmental policies, This affect the  livelihood and the culture of many  Indians who depend on local biodiversity.

A biodiversity hotspot is a bio geographic region that is under threat from humans. There are about 35 biodiversity hotspots in the world. These sites support nearly 60% of the world's plant, bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian species. Four such regions  exist in India . The Western Ghats ,the Himalayas, the Indo Burma region and the Sundaland.

The Western Ghats are a chain of hills that run along the western edge of peninsular India. These regions have moist deciduous forest and rain forest. The region has high species diversity. How the biodiversity of Western Ghats originated is a still a puzzle.  . Much of the world's spices such as black pepper and cardamom have their origins in the Western Ghats. The highest concentration of species in the Western Ghats is believed to be the Agasthyamalai Hills in the extreme south.

 The Eastern Himalayas

This region comprises part of Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and extends upto Burma. This  region is exceptionally rich in diversity and endemism.

The Indo Burma region

This region covers Myanmar,Thailand, Combodia, Vietnam ,Laos and the Indo Gangetic plains. Although it is one of the rich biologically rich it is the most threatened .

Sundaland

It covers Nicobar islands. It extends to the tectonic plates under the Indian Ocean.
