Green Homes
Environmental Friendly Home, Energy Efficient Home - these are some of the terms that we quite often hear now a days.
With the increase in population, the demand for dwellings have increased considerably. More houses are required to be constructed. In turn, man is compelled to inflict more damages to mother earth. The consequences are great. The ecological balance is disturbed. Consumption of energy increases, atmospheric pollution increases, depletion of precious water resources takes place, global warming increases and like that so many catastrophes. The environment becomes unbearable for humans to live. Here comes the importance of green buildings. By conforming to green building concepts, we are benefited by helping to retain nature with respect to location of building, to retain the external environment of building, to improve internal environment and to preserve faraway environment. Also green buildings help to save water, energy and material resources in the construction and maintenance of buildings.
The following steps will help to transform a house "green". -
Use energy efficient bulbs such as CFL and LED
Use solar water heaters
Maintain AC properly by changing filters at regular intervals
Adjust the temperature of the fridge
Put curtains to windows on the sunny side of house
Check settings of shower heads and taps in bath rooms
Have few green plants in the rooms
Use lap top in place of desk computers
Shut down the computer when not in use
Cover the pots when cooking
Have the clothes dried in sunlight instead of driers
Switch off fans and lights when not required
Use locally available materials for construction
