Man and Environment

 Man and Environment

Key words: Environment, scope, protection, conservation

Introduction
Our ancestors led a calm and peaceful life. They ate fruits and drank water from streams. They never bothered about their life style. It was basically tuned to the natural stream. But now the situation is completely changed. WE can’t have pure air to breathe in, pure water to drink or pure foodstuff to eat; every thing is polluted. The natural resources are used in such a manner that future generations will find it difficult to sustain their lives.

Scope
If we look into the area we live in, it can be seen that our surroundings were originally a natural landscape. Now the surroundings have been modified by human beings. Our lives depend on the environment. Our dependence on nature is so high that without protecting the earth’s environment, we can’t continue to live without protecting it.

As part of the overall development of the nation, technological innovations are being indiscriminately used. For growing more food, fertilizers and pesticides are being   used in a large scale. Mega dams have been constructed both for irrigation and hydroelectric generation. This has inflicted too much strain on our environment. This has led to deforestation which in turn has led to floods in rainy season and dry rivers in summer months.

Conservation of Resources
Each one of us in the planet should become increasingly concerned about our environment and change the way we use our resources. On one hand population increases, limiting the resources due to over utilisation and also wastages. We must try to use water, electricity, petroleum products etc in an optimum manner so that coming generation of people will be able to lead a comfortable life. We must try to utilise non-conventional energy in larger measures.

Importance
Environment is not a single subject; but it encompasses various subjects like biology, chemistry, physics, geography, economics etc. Large scale industrialization has led to pollution of air and water. Also large amount of solid wastes are generated. The disposal of these wastes is creating lot of problems. Air pollution leads to respiratory diseases, water pollution to gastro-intestinal diseases and many other pollutants cause cancer.

Our Duty
Every activity that we do in our day to day lives, has an adverse impact on nature’s integrity. As such, there is a growing demand for generating public awareness. Protecting our environment is economically more viable than cleaning it up once it is completely damaged. We should try to reduce wastages in all spheres. At the same time, effective steps should be taken to reduce pollution and degradation.
