One of the most important temples of Kerala is the Sabarimala temple. Every season, a very large number of pilgrims visit this temple to see and worship lord Ayyappa.
This year an unfortunate tragedy occurred , and lot of pilgrims lost their lives in the stampede. In the month of December on 1 of malayalam month makaram pilgrims gather to witness the holy flame in the distant hills. After seeing this holy flame, the devotees were returning when the unfortunate incident happened. It is being reported that there were not enough police personnel to control the surging crowd.
The important feature of this temple is that it is situated in thick forest and the journey to the site is tedious and one has to walk quite a distance as there is no motorable road. The temple is not open during the whole year, but only for a specific period only. Also ladies in the middle aged group are forbidden to visit the temple. The devotees are expected to observe some well defined practices such as wearing black dresses, early rise and bath in the morning, chanting of slokas etc.
Devotees come from far of places , even from other states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra etc.
Taking into account the unfortunate incident of loss of precious lives, it is necessary to take effective steps such that such things are not repeated in future.
